Weed management and herbicide resistance certification
A specialist track within the horticultural pathway: weed identification, herbicide science, resistance management, turf weed control and right-of-way vegetation management on industrial and municipal sites.
A standard track from PVS Academy, the training arm of Precision Vector Solutions, designed by Juan M Rodriguez, Board Certified Entomologist.
Spraying the same product every season is how resistance is built
Weed control on GCC sports turf, compounds, road verges and pipeline corridors is often a repeat of last year’s spray. When the same herbicide class goes down again and again, the weeds that survive it take over, and the programme quietly stops working.
This track teaches weed identification, the HRAC herbicide classification, rotation and mixture strategies, turf and industrial applications, and the documentation municipal and right-of-way contracts require.
Who takes this track
- Technicians applying herbicides on turf, compounds or verges
- Supervisors running vegetation contracts for municipalities or industry
- Landscape teams adding weed control to their scope
Six modules, from identification to rights-of-way
Every track builds on the Level 1 Foundation Certificate, which covers IPM, pest biology and inspection, pesticide science and application, and health, safety and documentation. The weed management modules then add the following.
Module 01 · Sector
Weed identification and survey
- Common GCC landscape weeds: identification, growth and spread
- Phragmites australis: biology, aggressive spread and GCC challenges
- Annual vs perennial weeds and what that means for control
- Weed mapping and site survey documentation
Module 02 · Sector
Herbicide science
- The HRAC classification system explained
- Selective vs non-selective herbicides: choosing the right product
- GHS labelling for herbicides and correct PPE
- Mixing, loading and calibration for accurate application
Module 03 · Sector
Herbicide resistance management
- Resistance mechanisms: target-site and metabolic pathways
- Rotation and mixture strategies that delay resistance
- Recognising resistance in the field and responding correctly
- Resistance documentation for regulators and clients
Module 04 · Sector
Turf weed control
- Common turf weeds in GCC sports fields and landscapes
- Pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide timing
- Selective herbicides in Bermuda and couch grass turf
- Prevention through cultural practice and healthy turf
Module 05 · Sector
Industrial sites and hard standings
- Weed control on industrial sites, compounds and hard standings
- Product selection for large non-selective applications
- Equipment: knapsack, vehicle-mounted and boom sprayers
- Safety protocols for industrial vegetation management
Module 06 · Sector
Rights-of-way vegetation management
- Roads, pipelines, power lines and rail corridors: regulatory context
- Fire risk reduction through structured vegetation control
- Environmental and non-target risk management
- Municipal contract documentation and reporting standards

Certified Weed Management Technician
Awarded on completion of the track. The certificate renews every three years and carries 3 CEU.
It also counts toward the wider PVS certification ladder: the Foundation Certificate plus any four tracks leads to the PVS Certified Professional Field Technician designation. See the full certification ladder, or the landscape and red palm weevil track and industrial and energy track.
