Bird control certification: netting, spikes and site surveys
Species identification, risk assessment, exclusion systems, netting, spikes and site surveys. Pigeons and crows are a growing problem in GCC cities, and the work is in demand across Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
A standard track from PVS Academy, the training arm of Precision Vector Solutions, designed by Juan M Rodriguez, Board Certified Entomologist.
Bird netting that leaves one gap does not work at all
Pigeons and crows return to a roost they know. Spikes on the wrong ledge or netting with a gap at one corner moves the birds a metre and leaves the client with the fouling and the bill. Good bird work starts with a survey and ends with an inspection.
This track covers identification, site surveys and risk assessment, the full range of deterrents, netting and spike installation standards, and the reporting that shows a client the pressure is actually falling.
Who takes this track
- Technicians installing netting, spikes and deterrents
- Supervisors who survey sites and quote exclusion work
- FM teams managing bird pressure on their buildings
Six modules, from identification to site surveys
Every track builds on the Level 1 Foundation Certificate, which covers IPM, pest biology and inspection, pesticide science and application, and health, safety and documentation. The bird management modules then add the following.
Module 01 · Sector
Bird identification
- Feral pigeon: roosting behaviour and flock dynamics
- House crow: territorial aggression and nesting habits
- Common myna, house sparrow and barn swallow
- Field identification from feathers, droppings, damage and sound
Module 02 · Sector
Site risk assessment
- Finding roost sites, active nests and flight paths
- Fouling severity index and structural damage levels
- Health risks: histoplasmosis, psittacosis and bird ectoparasites
- Survey documentation and photographic records
Module 03 · Sector
Deterrents and habitat modification
- Physical deterrents: spikes, netting, wire systems and electric track
- Visual and audio deterrents: reflectors, distress calls and decoys
- Habitat modification: food sources and nesting prevention
- Installation standards and quality inspection
Module 04 · Sector
Netting systems
- Netting materials: polyethylene, stainless steel and knotless
- Fixings: anchor bolts, tensioned cables and frames
- Coverage calculation and gap prevention
- Post-installation checklist and maintenance schedule
Module 05 · Sector
Spike systems
- Spike types: stainless, polycarbonate, wide-base and narrow-base
- Surface preparation: adhesive vs mechanical fixing
- Coverage gaps, corners and ledge profiling
- Maintenance inspections and pressure reassessment
Module 06 · Advanced
Site surveys and reporting
- Full site bird survey: method, mapping and reporting
- Tracking flock pressure and deterrent effectiveness
- Client reporting: fouling indices, actions and outcomes
- Public complaints, wildlife welfare and regulation
Birds in this track
Certified Bird Management Technician
Awarded on completion of the track. The certificate renews every three years and carries 3 CEU.
It also counts toward the wider PVS certification ladder: the Foundation Certificate plus any four tracks leads to the PVS Certified Professional Field Technician designation. See the full certification ladder, or the industrial and energy track and hospitality track.
